When I decided to undertake a sketching challenge, I poked around the house and found an unused Canson XL Mix Media spiral bound book and figured that would do. I LOVE the paper in these spiral bound books for making faces that I can then cut out and stick onto a mix media background in my art journal. It's perfect for that application.
I gathered the rest of my supplies (I photographed them for posterity and everything!) and called it a day.

I woke up with a stunning headache and lots of work to do, but I trudged downstairs to get work done so I could play with my uber cool collection of things to sketch with later in the day. Work got done. Headache did not recede, but I still wanted to play!

The first sketch I made was awful, which I fully expected, but I what made it really awful was that I sat there, head pounding, feeling totally intimidated by the size of the page. It is the smaller of the two sizes that the Canson XL comes in, but still...lots of white space to fill. Lots. And I just don't have the patience or time to futz about with that much page.
Simple, right? Get a different sketch book. Except that payday isn't until tomorrow, and I wanted to start today.

So I pouted a little and cast about in my throbby, poundy head for solutions, gave up for a bit while I went to watch the first few lessons in Sketchbook Delight (which is awesome!). I drooled over the options Alisa suggested in the supplies video and thought maybe I'd just start in the Canson and move on to something smaller when I could get to my art supplier. But, no. No, no no. I faced that enormous blank page and could not make a mark.
What to do???!!????
The solution finally presented itself when I went in to tidy the studio. I saw a brand new, still-in-the-plastic-wrap block of Fabriano paper. Yes! Now, this paper is 9x12, but when quartered, it is the perfect size. (Don't ask me to measure it, please. Not today.)
So, I sat down with my bone folder, the paper, a water brush, a hole punch and two binder rings.
And I proceeded to quarter a bunch of sheets, punch holes in 'em and turn them into a sketch book.
Yay!
And then I sketched a little despite my poundy head.
Yay!
Here's sketch 1/75
I'm so happy, both with the sketchbook itself, and with my first sketch.
Yay!

Speaking of Sketching, there will be a sketching support group opening up in The Studio either this evening or tomorrow. Lots of you have said you want to jump on board and do something like this, too. I'll send an invite to current Studio members as soon as it's up!
